Human Trafficking

Curriculum

The online training program consists of a series of online training modules built around the following curriculum (click on each module name to read its description):


  • Module 1 – Overview of Human Trafficking

    Goals:

    • Recognize fundamental concepts related to human trafficking;
    • Understand the scope of the problem in Ontario and across Canada;
    • Differentiate between related concepts and understand their interrelations.

    Outcomes:

    • Define human trafficking;
    • Differentiate between domestic and international human trafficking;
    • Differentiate between migrant smuggling and human trafficking;
    • Differentiate between different types of exploitation involved in human trafficking; and
    • Understand and be comfortable applying the concept of the four pillars or 4Ps that inform the response to human trafficking.

  • Module 2 – Human Trafficking in Canada and Ontario

    Goals:

    • Understand the scope of the issue of human trafficking in Canada and Ontario;
    • Become familiar with main legislation addressing human trafficking as well as with federal, provincial and local programs and services available to trafficked persons.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify human trafficking issues in the Canadian and Ontario contexts;
    • Operate within the framework of current legislation on human trafficking;
    • Recognize the role played by federal and provincial agencies in combating human trafficking.

  • Module 3 – The Dynamics of Human Trafficking

    Goal:

    • Understand the mindset of a trafficked person, the diversity of victim profiles and the difficulties in identifying them.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify the risk factors for becoming a victim of human trafficking;
    • Identify strategies used by traffickers to recruit and control their victims;
    • Understand the mindset of a trafficked person;
    • Recognize elements of human trafficking in various scenarios.

  • Module 4 – Human Trafficking Indicators

    Goal:

    • Present common indicators and red flags that can help identify a victim of human trafficking, along with assessment strategies and questions that can be used to determine if a person is being trafficked.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify situations of human trafficking using a list of red flags and indicators;
    • Use assessment questions and strategies effectively in order to identify human trafficking victims.
  • Module 5 – Service Needs of Trafficked Persons

    Goals:

    • Complex service needs of trafficked persons;
    • Strategies and recommendations for addressing these service needs following widely accepted best practices.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify the needs of trafficked persons in the short, medium and long term;
    • Apply the principles of the victim-centered approach and human rights approach in the provision of services;
    • Use widely accepted best practices in providing services to victims of human trafficking;
    • Provide culturally sensitive services to diverse victims and overcome cultural barriers;
    • Refer to current legislation to ensure compliance in the course of providing services .

  • Module 6 – Unique Needs of Aboriginal Clients

    Goal:

    • Key issues regarding human trafficking as it affects the Aboriginal communities in Ontario.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify the specific vulnerabilities of the Aboriginal population which exposes them to human trafficking;
    • Identify the service needs of Aboriginal trafficked persons; and
    • Identify programs and services available to Aboriginal trafficked persons and the organizations that offer culturally relevant services.

  • Module 7 – Unique Needs of Francophone Clients

    Goal:

    • Key issues regarding human trafficking as it affects Francophone communities in Ontario.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify the specific vulnerabilities of the Francophone population in relation to human trafficking;
    • Identify the specific service needs of Francophone trafficked persons and the importance of providing linguistically and culturally appropriate services;
    • Apply best practices to ensure the Francophone community is meaningfully involved in anti-human trafficking efforts and high quality French language services are available to trafficked persons;
    • Identify programs and services available to Francophone trafficked persons and the organizations that serve them.

  • Module 8 – First Response Practices

    Goal:

    • Identify and respond to the needs of victims in the first days of response and plan for their immediate safety.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify the immediate needs of trafficking victims in the first days of response;
    • Locate the first contact service providers across the province that can provide assistance in meeting the immediate needs of the trafficked person;
    • Create a safety plan that is tailored to the specific situation of the victim and others involved;
    • Create a network of contacts that can provide assistance to meet the immediate needs of trafficked persons.
    • Recognize the importance of the continuum of care and the essential role played by the primary client contact.
  • Module 9 – Medium and Long Term Support

    Goals:

    • Identify services and protocols to address the medium and long term needs of victims of human trafficking;
    • Tools and tips for building a network of contacts to create a local response mechanism;
    • Review the best practices and procedures for referring victims to community agencies and programs that are available in local communities and across the province.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify the medium and long term needs of trafficked persons in a variety of situations;
    • Locate agencies and programs that can provide medium and long term services; and
    • Use recommended best practices in creating protocols and procedures for referring victims to various agencies, services and programs, and building a network of contacts for a local response mechanism.

Each online training module is followed by a short quiz.

Participants who complete one or more of the online training modules can request a Certificate of Completion that will list all the modules they have completed.

The training program also includes a Handbook that covers the same topics as the online modules in an alternative format and a Toolkit for service providers. Numerous additional documents and links to resources are provided for participants who would like to learn more on the topics covered in the online training program.
